About Gashouder

Gashouder is the cultural icon of Amsterdam, where live, dance, art and performance come together. Here, both artists and audiences take centre stage in a grand, circular monument that still feels intimate. Located at the heart of the city, surrounded by Cultural Park Westergas.

Programming

Gashouder is a cultural venue for a wide range of disciplines. The programme is shaped with vision and cohesion, focusing on live, dance, art and performance. Together, they form a selection with a distinctive and recognisable signature. From live performances and nightlife to performance art and immersive installations.

By combining cultural programming with commercial events, Gashouder is able to operate independently. This balance allows us to create space for experimental and artistic productions that don’t fit anywhere else in the city. Makers are given the opportunity to develop work that aligns with both Gashouder and the stage of their artistic careers. With a capacity of more than 3,500 visitors, Gashouder offers space for artists who have outgrown clubs, yet still want to maintain the intimacy of their shows.

Cultural Partners

For many years, Gashouder has collaborated with cultural partners who are leading voices within their disciplines. These partnerships form the foundation of our multidisciplinary programming.

History: a living monument

Gashouder was built in 1885 as part of the Westergasfabriek and supplied the city with gas for light and heat for many years. After the factory closed in 1967, the building seemed to have lost its purpose, until pioneers such as the Holland Festival and Awakenings rediscovered the space in the 1990s. They showed that Gashouder could generate not only physical energy, but cultural energy as well, a natural evolution of its original function.

Today, Gashouder continues to build on that history. Where the building once powered the city, it now serves as a place where groundbreaking art, music, and culture inspire and connect new generations.
